Fosudo Speaks Out: Government Ignores Performing Arts Sector

The renowned Nigerian actor and academic, Professor Sola Fosudo, has voiced significant worries over the persistent disregard shown by both federal and state administrations towards the performing arts industry, highlighting specifically the absence of operational theater spaces available for Theater Arts graduates nationwide.

In a recent discussion, Professor Fosudo from Lagos State University (LASU) lamented how various governments have failed to furnish essential facilities required for the professional growth of theater graduates following their educational instruction.

The government hasn’t considered constructing multiple theaters for Theater Arts graduates to facilitate their employment and practical experience post-graduation," he remarked. "Instead, only one national theater was erected in Iganmu, Lagos. Hence, individuals residing in areas like Agege, Iyana Ipaja, and elsewhere within Lagos would need to travel all the way to Iganmu should there be a performance.

He drew a comparison between this scenario and those of the medical and legal fields, wherein the government significantly funds comprehensive hospitals and courthouses across the country. This investment generates job opportunities and practical settings for these disciplines' alumni.

Professor Fosudo contended that this strategy ought to also apply to the realm of art, observing that advanced nations frequently visited by Nigerian leadership deliberately allocate resources towards cultural facilities, thereby fostering growth within the artistic community.
