Artists Tell Gachgua: We're Not Pawns, Refusing to Play Your Tune
The Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK) has criticized the former Deputy President regarding statements urging a boycott of certain artists from the Mt Kenya area who met with his successor, Kithure Kindiki.
DCCAK denounced Gachagna's comments, labeling them as regressive and a clear violation of Kenya’s constitutional liberties.
Via Chairman Bob Ndolo, the organization charged the ex-DP with trying to suppress creative expressions and use cultural elements as a tool for political advantage.
"It is deeply regrettable that during a period when Kenya is striving to remove obstacles that have historically prevented our artists from earning their deserved revenue, a former Deputy President would coerce private entertainment establishments into denying artists the opportunity to make a livelihood," Ndolo stated.
He highlighted that artistic expression is protected under Articles 33 and 40 of the Kenyan Constitution, stating that these rights are non-negotiable and unconditional.
The DCCAK encouraged artists to keep producing fearlessly, addressing authority with honesty, elevating neighborhoods, and informing the public about critical topics such as the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), housing, and the Hustler Fund.
Ndolo emphasized that Kenyan artists won’t submit to what Gachagna desires since they believe their abilities come from God, not from Gachagna.
To Rigathi Gachagna, let us be clear: Kenyan artists do not see themselves as your subjects. They will neither conform to your demands nor seek your approval to express themselves. Their talents are gifts from God, not bestowed upon them by you.
This statement comes as a reaction to Gachagna’s urging for musicians from the Mt Kenya area, who met with his successor, Kithure Kindiki, at his Karen home, to apologize to the community.
Addressing the gathering at AIPCA Kihoya in Murang'a County, Gachagna asserted that these musicians are betrayers of their community.
"Our artists and musicians have betrayed the community. They were instructed to mislead you into believing that SHA is operational, roads are under construction, and the education sector is thriving," stated Gachagna.
Gachauga mentioned that following talks with the Mt Kenya elders, they insisted that the artists must apologize to the community.
The former DP said that should they fail to, the community should stop listening to their music and entertainment joints should stop inviting them to perform.
He additionally instructed individuals to unfollow those who do not apologize on social media platforms.
"I met with the elders yesterday, and they asked me to convey that these artists should apologize. If they do not, we will cease supporting their music," he stated.
